Good morning. With more than a handful of new members, I thought I’d take a moment and reiterate the vibe of this group. I started it last year as a way to join several eclectic subgroups of my friends doing something we all love: hiking. Since then, due to the enthusiastic response of many nature-loving friends and friends-of-friends and friends-of-friends-of-friends, etc. we have grown into a sizeable group. My template is to select, and toss up as an event, a Sunday afternoon hike in the Anchorage area, with the idea being to hit as many great spots as possible, and some of them two or three times. However, this group is also accommodating to anyone who is headed out and wants a partner or partners- and just wants to post a “I’m climbing Flattop this afternoon. Anyone care to join?” kind of notice. We love pictures here, especially selfies taken outside. The age range of our group runs the gamut- and our hikes almost always have kids and dogs tagging along. The dynamic is that we do not all know each other- yet- but that if you hike with us this summer, you are guaranteed to end the season with 30-50 new friends who share at least one interest in common. Last thing I’ll mention is that this year I am going to continue into wintertime activities- skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating, sledding and winter camping parties.

No money? No to life-saving medication, Yes to Prison August 25, 2016

No money, no Epi

Carolyn Y. Johnson, The Washington Post: EpiPen maker offers discounts after US outcry at price hikes, but not all users will benefit

“People just don’t want to go through the hassle,” said Gerard Anderson, a professor at health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “The problem is it doesn’t apply to nearly all of us. It only applies to a small subset of people that are willing to take out the coupon and use it. You should just make the drug, in the case the EpiPen, a lot cheaper.”

Sherwood District Court Judge Milas “Butch” Hale

Will Lee Robertson receive cancer drugs in Prison?

Sherwood District Court Judge Milas “Butch” Hale’s conduct while leading the court’s “hot checks division” is the focus of a lawsuit filed this week by the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas. Acting in this capacity, Hale sentenced Lee Robertson to 90 days in jail for owing the court $3,054.51. Robertson has been living with pancreatic cancer since 2009, which has affected his ability to pay back past debts.

But according to the suit, Robertson and his fellow defendants unknowingly sign away their right to an attorney in order to be let into the courtroom. The court also bars defendants’ family and friends from witnessing the proceedings, and no transcripts are kept of the hearings.

Safe Space and Real World? August 23, 2016

If you assure the safety of the people, location does not matter. This means people take responsibility (what a concept, eh?) for themselves as a group. One could also discuss the safe space between some folks ears as no thoughts will ever occur.~

How do you define Campus Safety, Safe space?

Mitch Albom: Is ‘safe space’ concept being abused on campus?

Learning life lessons

Now, it’s true, college can be challenging, and students of color or atypical backgrounds can face hurdles that others do not. Schools should do whatever is possible to ensure all students feel supported.

But unless you plan to live on your parents’ couch forever, the idea of spaces so “safe” you hear nothing you don’t like will quickly disappear with the cap and gown. So how does this prepare students for the real world?

In a vanishingly rare bit of good news this week, a federal judge has permanently blocked portions of an anti-abortion law in Florida designed to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. The money funds health screenings and a dropout prevention program.

It doesn’t fund abortions. At all. Ever. As usual.
