Howard Berkes, NPR: Remembering Allan McDonald: He Refused To Approve Challenger Launch, Exposed Cover-Up
Allan J. McDonald (died March 6, 2021) was an engineer, aerospace consultant, author[1] and the director of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor Project for Morton-Thiokol, a NASA subcontractor. He refused to sign off on the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger which broke apart 73 seconds into flight in the Challenger disaster in January 1986.[2] Deeply affected by the loss of the Challenger astronauts, McDonald endeavored to reveal the truth about the pressures to stay on launch schedule that led to the tragedy.[3] He co-authored Truth, Lies, and O-Rings: Inside the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster.[4]
