By Blake Essig: Lawmakers to discuss public safety during October special session
“This administration advocates for revisions to the law that would give courts the discretion to impose some jail time to those that commit class C felonies or repeat theft offenses,” said Jahna Lindemuth, Alaska Attorney General. “I believe the threat of jail time will provide a better deterrent and incentivize offenders suffering from drug addiction to actually get treatment.”

Many lawmakers have sounded off regarding the governor’s announcement Friday. Although all say they’re committed to making Alaska safer and are pleased Gov. Walker added SB 54 to the upcoming special session, some lawmakers, like Rep. Lance Pruitt of Anchorage, say SB 54 doesn’t go far enough.

The next special session is scheduled for October 23.
