By Chris Klint: APD detective sheds new light on teen’s murder
Anchorage District Attorney Clint Campion said Tuesday that it wasn’t clear whether Salazar or Taha fired the shot that killed Lawrence. Both were charged with first-degree murder, however, under state law allowing collective culpability for killings committed jointly by “principals and accomplices.”

“They basically both acted with intent, but because they acted together we don’t have to prove who fired,” Campion said.

“I’ve been to court a few times, but not for anything of my own – ever,” Rep. Talerico said. “So there’s definitely a level of embarrassment that comes along with this. I can’t remember ever having a traffic ticket.”

Talerico says if he is found to have violated the law, “I’ll take whatever lumps I have coming to me, but not only will I know, but everyone else will know exactly where that boundary is as well, and that’s probably not a bad thing either.”

Rescind SB91,tougher penalties.
By Blake Essig: Lawmakers to discuss public safety during October special session
“This administration advocates for revisions to the law that would give courts the discretion to impose some jail time to those that commit class C felonies or repeat theft offenses,” said Jahna Lindemuth, Alaska Attorney General. “I believe the threat of jail time will provide a better deterrent and incentivize offenders suffering from drug addiction to actually get treatment.”

Many lawmakers have sounded off regarding the governor’s announcement Friday. Although all say they’re committed to making Alaska safer and are pleased Gov. Walker added SB 54 to the upcoming special session, some lawmakers, like Rep. Lance Pruitt of Anchorage, say SB 54 doesn’t go far enough.

The next special session is scheduled for October 23.
