Vice President Mike Pence delivers remarks during an event where NASA introduced 12 new astronaut candidates at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Seven candidates are service members: Army Maj. Frank Rubio, a battalion surgeon for 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Dominick, Former Navy SEAL Jonny Kim, Air Force Lt. Col. Raja Chari, Marine Corps Maj. Jasmin Moghbeli, Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Bob Hines and Navy Lt. Kayla Barron. After completing two years of training, the new astronaut candidates could be assigned to missions performing research on the International Space Station, launching from American soil on spacecraft built by commercial companies, and launching on deep space missions on NASA’s new Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket.

U.S. Army Soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, N.C., take a quick rest before assuming security of the perimeter of The Troussaint Louverture International Airport, Haiti, Jan. 17, 2010, in response to the earthquake that devastated much the country.
