Albert Loop Trail Bear Alert Eagle River

Albert Loop Trail at Eagle River Nature Center closing for season

August 11, 2016 (Anchorage, AK) – Spawning salmon have returned to waters at the Eagle River Nature Center and so have the bears that feed on them. As a result, Alaska State Parks is closing the Albert Loop Trail and its vicinity, effective at noon today (Thursday, Aug. 11). At this time of year, black and brown bears and their cubs use the bridges and beaver dams as fishing platforms and adjacent brush and trees for cover.

Today’s closure does not affect the Iditarod/Crow Pass trail, the Rodak Loop and viewing platforms, or the Dew Mound Trail. Reopening of the Albert Loop trail will be announced and most likely will happen at freeze-up when the majority of bears go into hibernation. The trails seasonal closures have occurred since 1997.

Anyone recreating on an Alaska trail is encouraged to take appropriate precautions. Be prepared to encounter a bear, and be knowledgeable in recognizing bear behavior and responding to an encounter.

A River Runs Rampant Through It

Who did not know, does to understand that rivers change course?

This is not something new. This river has always been a problem for those who deliberately choose to build on it. When home owners did their research, how did they not find out that flooding and erosion has been an on-going issue for years? Home owners had the opportunity years ago to pay for flood and erosion control and they refused to. Why is it someone else’s responsibility?

Kodachrome slide taken by my dad while we were in Pacific Grove for the Christmas holiday, December, 1967. From the Monterey Herald: "On Sunday, Dec. 24, 1967, the old Carmel Canning Company on Cannery Row caught fire and burned for more than four hours. The blaze, which had more than 65 firemen respond from Monterey, Seaside and Pacific Grove, caused an estimated $250,000 in damage. Fire and smoke billowed from the structure, causing embers to fall on homes in New Monterey and start smaller fires. Fire Chief Clifford Hebrard said it was his opinion “that the fire was set.” An arson investigation was to take place the next day."

Well, it was either keep the mud off my Bronco or don’t make the baby cry. And that’s why I’m not home right now. Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.
