1918 – Women enlist in the United States Marine Corps for the first time. Opha May Johnson is the first woman to enlist.
Opha May Johnson (née Jacob, May 4, 1878 – August 11, 1955)[1] was the first woman known to have enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. She joined the Marine Corps Reserve on August 13, 1918, officially becoming the first female Marine.[2]

Maria Margarita “Margaret” Tafoya (Tewa name: Corn Blossom; August 13, 1904 – February 25, 2001)[1] was the matriarch of Santa Clara Pueblo potters.[2] She was a recipient of a 1984 National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which is the United States government’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts.[3]
