On This Day

1504 – In Ireland, the Hiberno-Norman de Burghs (Burkes) and Anglo-Norman Fitzgeralds fight in the Battle of Knockdoe.[3]
The Battle of Knockdoe took place on 19 August 1504 at Knockdoe, in the Parish of Lackagh (Irish Leacach), County Galway, between two Anglo-Irish lords—Gerald FitzGerald, Earl of Kildare, the Lord Deputy of Ireland, and Ulick Fionn Burke, lord of Clanricarde—along with their respective Irish allies.[1] The cause was a dispute between Maelsechlainn mac Tadhg Ó Cellaigh (Mod. Irish Maoilseachlainn mac Thaidhg Uí Cheallaigh)(O’Kelly), King of Ui Maine – Mod. Irish Uí Mháine)[2] and Clanricarde. The major contemporary sources for this battle are the Gaelic Irish annals and a sixteenth-century manuscript written in the Pale known as “the Book of Howth”.[3]

Born On This Day

1815 – Harriette Newell Woods Baker, American editor and children’s book writer (d. 1893)[12]
Harriette Newell Woods Baker (pen names, Mrs. Madeline Leslie and Aunt Hattie; August 19, 1815 – April 26, 1893) was an American author of books for children, and editor.

Baker’s career as an author began when she was about 30 years old. She devoted herself successfully to novels; but after about 15 years, she wrote popular religious literature. Her most famous book, Tim, the Scissors Grinder sold half a million copies, and was translated into several languages. Baker published under the pen-name “Mrs. Madeline Leslie,” about 200 moral and religious tales. She wrote under her own name or initials, and under that of “Aunt Hattie.”[1] She wrote chiefly for the young.[2] She was still writing in 1893 when she died.[3]
