1904 – The distress signal “CQD” is established only to be replaced two years later by “SOS”.[11]
CQD (transmitted in Morse code as ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄) is one of the first distress signals adopted for radio use. On 7 January 1904 the Marconi International Marine Communication Company issued “Circular 57”, which specified that, for the company’s installations, beginning 1 February 1904 “the call to be given by ships in distress or in any way requiring assistance shall be ‘C Q D’ “.[1]

Anna Murray Vail (January 7, 1863 – December 18, 1955) was an American botanist and first librarian of the New York Botanical Garden. She was a student of the Columbia University botanist and geologist Nathaniel Lord Britton, the force behind the founding of the New York Botanical Garden, and was active in its creation.
